George Johnston Surprises Fans for their 65th Wedding Anniversary

Wanderers First Team player George Johnston recently surprised long term supporters and season ticket holders Pat and Arthur as part of Mind’s #DoOneThing campaign. Ahead of World Mental Health Day on Sunday 10th October, EFL clubs will across this last week ‘Do One Thing’ as an act of kindness to someone deserving within their local communities, with Mind campaigning that if we all do one thing to fight for mental health, we can change everything. As the partnership continues into its fourth season, the EFL, Bolton Wanderers in the Community and Bolton Wanderers Football Club continue to highlight the partnership and raise awareness of the importance of mental health.

Invited to the University of Bolton Stadium by Bolton Wanderers in the Community’s Active Ageing and Wellbeing Lead, Carl Halliwell, the couple were thrilled to be surprised by Wanderers defender George Johnston who had brought with him a signed Bolton Wanderers shirt aptly numbered 65, and a card signed by the entire first team squad congratulating them on their 65th wedding anniversary. Johnston then spent time with the couple, where Arthur and Pat recalled their first Bolton Wanderers games attended at Burnden Park, some of their favourite players and also how much they were enjoying watching the team play this year.

Speaking after the meeting the couple Johnston said.

“It was fantastic to meet Pat and Arthur and congratulations to them.

“It’s a lovely story and fantastic that they are still watching us as such loyal fans after all this time.

“I’m delighted if this one thing makes their experience of following Wanderers even better.

“And it also shows that doing one thing can make a difference to hopefully help someone’s mental health and well-being.”

Bolton Wanderers in the Community’s Carl Halliwell was equally thrilled with Johnston’s appearance.

“It was great of George to present Pat and Arthur with the signed shirt, something they will treasure as lifelong Bolton fans.

“Pat and Arthur have been attending our Sporting Memories group and online yoga sessions for some time and it’s been a delight keeping in touch and keeping their spirits high.”
